Great Expectations
It is a good job market. The unemployment rate hovers between 4 - 5% and that means that there are significantly fewer people registered with the Texas Workforce Commission. Anyone remember 1986, with double digit unemployment?
Despite much better times, the laws of gravity still apply to the job market:
1. The higher your position or compensation, the longer it will take for you to find a suitable position. The corporate pyramid thins toward the top.
2. You are hired based on five major areas. Skills that get you hired are:
You need a combination of the above to get hired.
3. Compensation at a future employer is based on what the job and your skills are worth to the company, and also on your previous compensation. Compensation for positions falls within broad salary bands. Know where you stand in the compensation range. This will make your decision easier when an offer is extended.
4. Remember that every contact and impression you make with a possible employer or recruiter reflects on you and your career potential. Whether you are interested in the company or job, consider that person a part of your network. Remember, Houston is a small world - you never know where you will be working or who might be your boss.
