Hiring the Best

Hiring the Best: 5 Ways to Improve Your Odds

by Moritza E. Day, CPA

Hiring qualified employees has been cited as the number one concern of business people.  "The Houston Business Journal" cited a poll saying that 9 out of 10, or 87% of business people saw hiring and retaining quality employees as their number one priority.

It's so important- so how do you do it?  Here are some tips to hiring the best.

  1. Analyze your needs before you start the interview process- why are you hiring, what attitudes, personality traits, and skills do you need?  Start from zero and build the requirements for the job.

  2. Write a detailed job description, listing duties and responsibilities.  The job description should include daily, weekly, monthly, and annual duties.

  3. Be specific regarding education, and certification required.  And make sure that you need all the initials that you request.  Remember, with those increased skills come increased salary and career expectations.

  4. Make your hiring process a priority.  Establish a timetable for each phrase of the process.  Determine the time allotted to planning, analysis, preparation of the job description, search process, review of the candidates, offer process, closing of the candidate, orientation, and training of the new employee.

  5. Check references on the candidates.  Verify the accuracy of the data provided and obtain more in-depth information when possible.  Determine questions in advance, and make sure that all questions are lawful.
